"Together or separately?" is one of the most common questions in service, and the answers vary: everyone pays for their own, everyone pays an equal share, one pays a fixed amount and the rest the rest, or one bill is settled with cash and card. bessa has a way for each case. This guide shows which fits when.

Only one payment through a connected card terminal is possible per invoice. If several guests want to pay by card, use one of the ways with one invoice per guest or share.
Everyone pays for their own
Prepare when booking: if you already know at ordering time that guests will pay separately, keep one sub-group per guest at the table, e.g. "Table 12/01" and "Table 12/02". Each sub-group is its own order, and there is nothing left to sort out when taking payment.
Select when taking payment: without sub-groups, tap Pay in the table detail and choose the quantity this guest pays per item, e.g. 1 of 3 beers. After payment, the rest stays open at the table.
Details in Tables.
Equal shares or a fixed amount
-
In the table detail, tap Pay.
-
In the options menu, choose Select split.
-
Choose 1/x and enter the number of guests, e.g.
4, or choose Value and enter the amount this guest pays. -
Choose the payment method and tap Pay.
The Sales Point creates a separate invoice for this share; the table stays open with the rest. For the next guest, repeat the steps with what remains: for four guests, 1/x with 4, then 3, then 2, and finally the entire rest.
The invoices show the items as fractions, e.g. 0.25 × bottle of wine. From bessa Kassa 6.0.11, all invoices together add up exactly to the amount ordered.
With Select split in the menu of a single item you split only that item, e.g. the shared bottle of wine, while everyone pays for their own food.
One invoice with several payment methods
If a party pays together, but partly in cash and partly by card, choose the Split payment method and enter the partial amounts per payment method. This creates one invoice that shows each partial payment. Details in Checkout and pay.
What doesn't carry over when splitting
-
Discounts, vouchers and tips are not distributed proportionally when splitting. Set them for the invoice they belong to.
-
Charging to a guest room cannot be combined with a split; the entire selected amount is always transferred.
Frequently asked questions
Can the guest see in advance what they will pay? Yes. Select the items or the split and print Print invoice preview from the options menu.
Can I undo a split before taking payment? Yes. As long as you haven't tapped Pay, reset the selection with Reset in the options menu.
A guest needs a hospitality receipt for a business meal. What do I do? Above €250 (Austria: €400), link the invoice to the guest or their company before payment, because the name cannot be added afterwards. Print the hospitality receipt after payment or from the invoice list, see Print a hospitality receipt.
