An ordering kiosk takes the queue off the counter at peak times: guests put together their order at their own pace, pay by card and collect as soon as their number is called. bessa offers two solutions for this. This guide helps you choose and shows how kiosk, Sales Point and kitchen work together.

Terms and distinction in Term: Self-service mode and Term: bessa Gastro Kiosk.
Option A: Self-service kiosk
The self-service kiosk is a bessa Kassa signed in with a user whose role only has the Kiosk Mode permission. With this sign-in, the Sales Point locks itself into kiosk mode, and guests cannot leave the app. A role example is in Structure user access.
To set it up:
-
Design a separate, clear order screen with large tiles for the kiosk and assign it to the kiosk Sales Point.
-
Set up card payment. Without an extra terminal this works with bessa Pay directly on the device; for other SoftPOS solutions see SoftPOS in kiosk mode. While a payment is open at the terminal, the Sales Point plays an announcement reminding the guest to complete it, see Payment Reminder in Self-Service Mode.
-
Set up printing groups and the order monitor so that kiosk orders reach the kitchen, see Plan the order flow.
If an order at the kiosk results in a negative amount, e.g. through a deposit return, the Sales Point only pays out with explicit approval. Without approval it refuses. Details in Self-service kiosk payouts.
Returns at the kiosk without a minus: At the kiosk the guest cannot type a minus. If guests should return reusable cups themselves, for example, create a return article of type Deposit and set the Sign of the quantity to Always negative in the Configuration tab. Each tap then books −1. This requires bessa Kassa version 6.2.0 or later, see Sign, Value Ranges and Step Size.
Option B: bessa Gastro Kiosk
The bessa Gastro Kiosk runs on its own kiosk terminals and passes every order on to your bessa Kassa. There it is accepted like an online order, booked, printed in the kitchen or shown on the order monitor, and the receipt is created.
-
Paid at the kiosk: orders paid by card are closed by the Sales Point automatically with an invoice.
-
Payment at the counter: orders the guest pays in cash at the counter stay open and appear on the Sales Point under Open orders with pickup code and name; staff need the Open orders permission for this. See Online orders.
-
Pickup number: kiosk orders carry the pickup number from the order settings in the bessa Manager; there you also decide whether guests may choose their own pickup number, see Standard order settings.
-
Presentation: start images and nutrition facts make the range more appealing on the kiosk, see bessa Kiosk image settings for the start page and Display nutrition facts on the kiosk.
bessa sets up the bessa Gastro Kiosk for you. Details in bessa Gastro Kiosk.
Good to know for both options
-
Range with options: the kiosk asks for extras, sauces and menu sizes via article options just like the Sales Point, see Build-your-own products. A sensible preselection saves the guest taps.
-
Sold-out articles: if the kitchen blocks an article on the order monitor, it can no longer be booked on the Sales Point and the terminals.
-
Eat-in or takeaway: ask for the consumption type if it affects price or VAT rate, see Eat in or take away.
